Why we make our chopping boards from solid Aussie timber
At Miller Rustic Designs in Inverell, we make chopping boards the traditional way from a single slab of Australian hardwood such as camphor laurel or red gum. No glues, no resins, and no laminated layers. Just solid timber shaped and finished by hand.
We keep things simple. A chopping board should be strong, safe, and built to last.
Why timber instead of plastic
Plastic boards are cheap and convenient but they wear out quickly. Every cut creates grooves that are difficult to fully clean and over time the surface breaks down.
Timber performs differently. Hardwoods like camphor laurel naturally resist bacteria and with proper care remain in good condition for many years. Instead of degrading quickly they develop character over time.
The other issue is lifespan. Most plastic boards end up in landfill once they become heavily marked. A solid timber board can be maintained, re oiled, and used for decades.
Why we do not use stainless steel
Stainless steel might look modern but it is not ideal for everyday food preparation.
It is harsh on knives and will dull an edge faster than timber. It can also feel noisy and slippery which reduces control during chopping.
Timber provides a more stable cutting surface. It is quieter, gentler on blades, and more comfortable to use day to day.
What makes ours different
Every board we make is produced in regional New South Wales using locally sourced timber. Each piece is cut from a single slab then shaped, sanded, and finished by hand using food safe oils.
Because the grain is never engineered or joined every board has its own natural pattern. No two are ever the same.
They are designed for daily use but also present beautifully when serving food for family or guests.
