Choosing the Right Timber Chopping Board at Rustic Designs
Share
If you have ever stood in front of a wall of chopping boards wondering which one is right for you you are not alone. At Rustic Designs we handcraft boards from a small selection of beautiful Australian timbers. Each one has its own personality and its own strengths. Some are lightweight for travellers and people with joint issues. Some are dense and ready for the biggest cook ups. All of them are designed to look stunning on your bench as well as work hard in your kitchen.
Below is a simple guide to help you pick the timber that suits your cooking style.
Camphor Laurel

Camphor laurel is one of our most popular timbers. It has naturally occurring antimicrobial properties which means it helps fight off bacteria on the board surface. Camphor laurel is also fairly lightweight which makes it a great choice if you have wrist or hand pain or if you travel in a caravan and need to keep your overall weight down. The colours are gorgeous too with swirls of gold honey and soft browns. It is the perfect all rounder for everyday slicing and dicing.
Beefwood

Beefwood is a standout timber with deep red tones and striking grain. It is a little heavier and denser which gives it a premium feel and makes it ideal for people who want a board that feels solid and stable while chopping. The tight grain helps keep the surface resistant to deep scratches. If you want a board that doubles as a serving platter and sparks conversation Beefwood is a great pick.
Ironbark

Ironbark is exactly what it sounds like tough reliable and built for long term use. This timber is very dense and perfect for customers who love preparing large cuts of meat. It pairs beautifully with our drip tray option which catches meat juices and helps keep your bench clean. Ironbark boards are also excellent if you want something that lasts for many years and will stand up to serious kitchen work.
Stringybark

Stringybark sits somewhere between lightweight and heavy duty making it a nice middle option. It is easy to handle and the paler colour looks fresh and modern in any kitchen. The grain is fine and smooth which makes it gentle on knives. If you are after a board that is beautiful without being bulky Stringybark might be your match.
Features That Make Life Easier
Many of our chopping boards come with helpful design additions.
A hole in the corner makes hanging simple which saves bench space and helps the board dry thoroughly between uses.
Some styles have carved handles which give you a secure grip when carrying food around the kitchen or serving at the table.
Our chopping blocks are heavier duty and perfect for briskets roasts and anything chunky. They usually include a drip tray carved around the edge to collect meat juices. This is especially handy during big cook ups when things can get messy fast.
Caring for Your Board

We make our own low tox board oil using organic jojoba oil and organic beeswax. We blend it to the perfect consistency so it sinks in easily and leaves a silky finish. Regular oiling keeps your board looking fresh and prevents it from drying out. If you start noticing the surface looking tired or showing knife scratches it is time for a top up.
To apply the oil use a clean dry cotton rag. Rub a generous amount into the timber using small circles. Let it soak for a few hours or overnight then wipe away any excess. Your board will look revived nourished and ready for another round in the kitchen.
